Major contributions in high-energy nuclear physics and quark–gluon plasma research. Helped foster India's participation in experiments at CERN and Brookhaven and contributed to related theoretical and experimental work.
A leading Indian scientist who advanced high-energy and nuclear physics on the international stage. As director of VECC and Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics he strengthened research infrastructure and promoted India's participation in international collaborations such as CERN. He received numerous national and international honours (including the Padma Bhushan) and contributed to mentoring the next generation.
