A graphic novel based on Bell's childhood. It recounts her hearing loss from meningitis and her experience using a bulky Phonic Ear hearing device. Using rabbits as characters, it frames deafness as a source of strength and seeks to provide positive representation for deaf children.
One book in the Rabbit & Robot series about friendship and gentle adventures, told with humor appropriate for early chapter-book readers.
El Deafo is regarded as an important work for increasing positive representation and self-acceptance for deaf children. The book received multiple awards and nominations, is used in educational and library settings, and helped broaden the audience for children's graphic novels.
I wanted there to be a handbook for hearing people so they knew how to understand and communicate with deaf people without being disrespectful.
