A firsthand memoir recounting Bates's experiences during the 1957 Little Rock Central High School desegregation crisis and her role mentoring and supporting the Little Rock Nine. It is a vivid account of the civil rights struggle and the fight for educational equality.
Daisy Bates played a pivotal role in the Little Rock Central High School desegregation crisis and had a lasting influence on local and national civil rights activism. Through advocacy journalism at the Arkansas State Press and her mentorship of the Little Rock Nine she advanced educational equality. She is commemorated by monuments, a school, a state-designated day, and a statue in the U.S. Capitol.
"My life now had a secret goal – to find the men who had done this horrible thing to my mother."
"You're filled with hatred. Hate can destroy you, Daisy. Don't hate white people just because they're white. If you hate, make it count for something."
