Pre-eminent among Hungarian violinists, winner of the Carl Flesch International Violin Competition (1955). Premiered and recorded works by 20th-century Hungarian composers such as Gyula Dávid, Frigyes Hidas, Pál Kadosa. Noted for recordings of Bartók and Beethoven. Headed Franz Liszt Academy of Music (1967-1980). Received numerous national awards including Kossuth Prize (1963).
