H. D. Sankalia pioneered modern excavation techniques and stratigraphic excavation in India, contributing major prehistoric discoveries and reconstruction of regional cultures. Through teaching at Deccan College he trained a generation of archaeologists and played a key role in institutionalising Indian archaeology.
