A sociologist who made significant contributions to sociology of religion, race and ethnicity studies, and the study of countercultures. He originated the concept of 'contraculture' in the 1960s and influenced teaching and research through his textbooks and scholarly works. Longtime professor emeritus at Oberlin College.
