José María Mendiluce was a Spanish writer and politician who served as a United Nations representative during the Yugoslav conflicts. He represented Spain in the European Parliament from 1994 to 2004, received the Creu de Sant Jordi in 1996 and the 2nd prize of the Premio Planeta in 1998. He came out publicly in 2003 and died in 2015.
