Kay Boyle connected personal experience and political concerns in 20th-century American literature and was a notable member of the expatriate literary community in Paris. She published numerous novels, stories, poems and translations; many of her papers are held at the Morris Library at Southern Illinois University. She was also active as a political activist, supporting civil rights, anti-nuclear efforts and protests against the Vietnam War.
