Kurt von Fritz was a prominent German scholar in classical philology. He is noted for refusing the oath of loyalty under the Nazi regime, being dismissed and emigrating, then returning after the war to teach in Germany. He was elected to several academies and received the Sigmund Freud Prize in 1981 for his contributions to academic prose.

- One of the very few German professors who refused to swear an oath of loyalty to Adolf Hitler in 1934; he was dismissed in 1935.
- Taught at institutions in the UK and USA during his exile (Corpus Christi College, Oxford; Reed College; Columbia University).
- Returned to Germany in 1954 and taught at the University of Munich from 1958 until his retirement in 1968.
