Legacy
As founding director of the Royal Institute of Navigation and long-time editor of the Journal of Navigation, he made significant contributions to navigation and seamanship. As a devoted solo sailor of the small yacht Jester he became an iconic figure in British sailing and is recorded in the Guinness World Records as the oldest man to cross the Atlantic single-handed.
