Legacy

An important vocalist and musicologist who, while inheriting the Paluskar tradition, helped establish university-level music education. As the first dean of the music faculty at Banaras Hindu University he contributed to systematizing and disseminating Indian classical music. Contemporary scholarship has also critiqued his neglect of contributions by Muslim musicians.
