French journalist and writer who covered wars in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Algeria, Vietnam, Israel, Biafra, Iraq, and others. In 1963, first Western journalist to visit People's Republic of China for the Washington Post. Reported for Paris Match and produced docuseries for France 2. Won Prix des libraires in 1982 and Prix Interallié in 1985.
