Literary award established in 1975 to commemorate David Higham's 80th birthday. Awarded annually to debut novels or short story collections by citizens of the Commonwealth, Republic of Ireland, Pakistan, and South Africa. Discontinued in 1999 on the grounds that 'the winner did not receive sufficient attention.' Winners from 1975 to 1998 include Jane Gardam (1975), Jim Crace (1986), Vikram Chandra (1995), etc.
