Description

The Patrick White Award is an annual literary award established in 1974 by the trust founded by Patrick White using the prize money from his 1973 Nobel Prize in Literature. It is awarded to writers who have demonstrated high creativity over many years but have not necessarily received sufficient recognition. Recipients are principally selected automatically without application. The prize amount varies by year; examples include $25,000 (traditional amount), $18,000 in 2010, $23,000 in 2012, and $15,000 in 2020. White designated the announcement date as the Friday of the week following the Melbourne Cup to shift attention from sports to literature.
