Reginald Hill

Winner of the 1990 CWA Gold Dagger Award. Yorkshire police superintendent Andy Dalziel witnesses a man pointing a gun at a woman through his kitchen window, but when he arrives on the scene, the woman is dead and both male suspects insist she was trying to shoot herself. • Praised for its psychological suspense, multi-layered plotting, and the distinctive character of Dalziel. Receives high praise overall.

  • Japanese readers largely praise the depth of character portrayal and Dalziel's caustic personality, while some find the length excessive and the mystery-play subplot disruptive. Mixed reception overall.

Winner of the Gold Dagger Award for Best Crime Novel of the Year…’Reginald Hill is on stunning form…the climax is devastating’ Marcel Berlins, The Times When Detective Superintendent Andy Dalziel witnesses a bizarre murder across the street from his own back garden, he is quite sure he knows who the culprit is. After all, he's seen him with his own eyes. But what exactly does he see? And is he mistaken? Peter Pascoe certainly thinks so. To make matters worse, he's being pestered by an anonymous letter-writer who is planning suicide and has chosen to confide in Dalziel. The local Mystery Plays should provide a welcome distraction as Dalziel's been cast as God. Unfortunately, the other lead is a local builder who also happens to be the chief suspect in some recent disappearances that might actually be murders…

Reginald Hill is a native of Cumbria and former resident of Yorkshire, the setting for his novels featuring Superintendent Dalziel and DCI Pascoe, ‘the best detective duo on the scene bar none’ (‘Daily Telegraph’). Their appearances have won him numerous awards including a CWA Gold Dagger and Lifetime Achievement award. They have also been adapted into a hugely popular BBC TV series.

Reviews

  • I haven't read i yet, but I know I always love Reginald Hill's books.

  • Okay.sometimes boring.

  • Although it starts off a bit silly, it draws you in quickly with well-drawn characters. The background of a nameless city in Yorkshire England is carefully built to give the reader a good sense of place. Two different plot lines are woven throughout in a web of intrigue. You're led in one direction and then another with seemingly no connection but Hill brings them together in a neat braid of a story.

  • I read these books ages ago at random. I am now working my way through re-reading in order. The characters are well developed over the series and the writers style very clearly matures with time. By the time we are on this book, it is very well written and you are invested in the characters. Dalziel is a character that some may find offensive, but takne in context, he is very amusing.
