Oceana Fine
In the wheatbelt of Western Australia, beneath a vast blue and gold landscape, lie disused mine shafts. Above the ground rise the silos. University student Fin Torrent goes to work in this remote country during his summer holidays, drawn into the land's myths and mysteries. Part whodunit, part psychological thriller, part magical fantasy, the novel charts the rises and falls of the Cleaver farming family against a landscape of extraordinary power and menace.
Work Information
A bold, genre-defying novel where violence rubs shoulders with a strange lyricism.
Tom Flood's debut novel, published by Allen & Unwin in 1989, was first recognized with the Australian/Vogel Literary Award for manuscript in 1988. The following year it was published, and in 1990 won both the Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Fiction and the Miles Franklin Literary Award. Set in the West Australian wheatbelt, it follows a university student who becomes entangled in the secrets of the Cleaver family and the strange forces of the land during a summer harvest job. A new digital edition was released in 2021 and a new paperback edition via Brio Books (Untapped) followed in 2022. > 'Always original, exciting, different...a new author with ideas and daring!' — Geoffrey Dutton
Review Summaries
-
Contemporary reviews praised the novel's distinctive blend of magical realism achieved through landscape, family history, legend, and memory. Critics noted the subtle way in which a past encounter changes in the retelling as the narrator changes, and described the book as standing out from the plain of naturalism as jagged and distinctive as a silo.
