In the 1970s, Larry Ott and Silas "32" Jones were boyhood pals in a small town in rural Mississippi. Their worlds were as different as night and day: Larry was the child of lower-middle-class white parents, and Silas, the son of a poor, black single mother. But then Larry took a girl to a drive-in movie and she was never seen or heard from again. He never confessed . . . and was never charged. More than twenty years have passed. Larry lives a solitary, shunned existence, never able to rise above the whispers of suspicion. Silas has become the town constable. And now another girl has disappeared, forcing two men who once called each other "friend" to confront a past they've buried for decades.

Tom Franklin is the New York Times bestselling author of Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter , which won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and the Crime Writers' Association's Gold Dagger Award.

  • "The past is never dead; it isn't even past" Wm. Faulkner

  • A Mississippi story with betrayal, heartache, redemption, and forgiveness

Growing up in the south, there was always a catchy phrase or song going around when we were little to help our young brains retain information. One of those happened to be a song to help us remember how to spell Mississippi; “M, I, crooked letter, crooked letter I, crooked letter, crooked letter, I, humpback, humpback, I.” So, when I saw the title of this southern book, I immediately grinned and went to read the blurb which drew me right on in. Boy am I glad that I did! This story was told in dual timelines, that of late 1970’s Mississippi and some 20+ years later. Meet Larry Ott, part of the lower white class, who is a son to Carl & Ina Ott. His dad runs one of the towns automotive shops. Larry is an outcast, not into socializing or sports but rather completely into reading books, with his favorite genre…HORROR. Then there is popular Silas Jones, who was born to a single, black mother named Alice. Silas is also known as 32, which is his number on the baseball team (man oh man is he a good player). Despite the racism in the 70’s, the young men were able to bond and develop a friendship. But all of that comes crumbling down when Larry takes a neighboring girl on a date who is never heard from again. Her body was never recovered, and Larry never confessed to the crime which did not prevent the local citizens from making up their own minds about what happened. As if Larry was not already ostracized enough for being an outcast, things get worse and harder than he could have imagined. Fast forward to present day. Larry is 41 years old and living in his mother’s house. He has followed in his father’s footsteps and runs his automotive shop even though it lacks customers. The town has never forgotten about the missing girl. Silas has returned to town after all those years and is now the local constable. The two of them no longer speak to one another. That is until another girl goes missing and all fingers are pointing to Larry. Is he the culprit? Has “Scary Larry” struck again? What did I like? The descriptions in the book were so vivid and beautiful, it made you feel as if you were there. For example, “But in the woods, if you stopped, if you grew still, you’d hear a whole new set of sounds, wind rasping through silhouetted leaves and the cries and chatter of blue jays and brown thrashers and redbirds and sparrows, the calling of crows and hawks, squirrels barking, frogs burping, the far baying of dogs, armadillos snorkeling through dead leaves and dozens of other noises.” I also love stories with dual timelines and mysteries. Throw in that this is southern fiction and this is a “winner, winner, chicken dinner” for me. The character development is out of this world. These characters are flawed, and Tom Franklin makes you feel their flaws, and ache right along with them. This book hits on so many topics; there is racism, sadness, heartache, betrayal, regret, fear, redemption, and forgiveness. It is a great reminder of the fact that it is never too late to “right” some wrongs we have made. Being honest can prevent the heartache of other people, including the ones we love.

  • Atmospheric, suspence filled crime novel

I enjoyed this book because unusually it had good characterisation of the main characters. It had a good story and the action took place over a period of years. It is set in Mississippi with great attention to the detail of the setting. It is beautifully written and I did not have any idea who the perpetrator of the murders was until the very end. A very good read.

  • BUENISIMO

  • Good story

Very engaged no story, quick pace and enjoyable. Was hard to put it down, definitely recommend for anyone to read.
