The bestselling book for every boy from eight to eighty, covering essential boyhood skills such as building tree houses*, learning how to fish, finding true north, and even answering the age old question of what the big deal with girls is. Despite finding time to write historical novels and The Dangerous Book for Boys , Conn Iggulden is in some ways better known as a trainer of Tollins. His Tollin troupe, Small and Mighty, are famous in Tasmania, where they often play to packed houses. Tragically, he lost his two best-known performers earlier this year. "The thing about transporting Tollins in shoe boxes," he says, "the really important thing, is to remember to put the airholes in." Lizzy Duncan, with her trademark blue glasses, was a founding member of the Tollins in Art program, where inner-city schoolchildren are taken to the countryside by bus and encouraged to paint and observe Tollins in their natural habitats. Tollins: Explosive Tales for Children was her first illustrated book. Lizzy's abstract paintings of Tollins are much sought after whenever they appear at Sotheby's auction house, and she is very active in promoting Tollin rights and registering them as a protected wetland species—or as a dryland species, if the weather's been good. Conn and Lizzy's first book together, Tollins: Explosive Tales for Children , was published in 2009 to great critical acclaim—and has ensured that no one will ever mistake a Tollin for a fairy again. Hal Iggulden is the artistic director of the Holdfast Theatre Company in Leicester, England.

Reviews

  • Fun

Ostensibly written for boys around 8-12, this book can be enjoyed by boys from 8 to 108. There's plenty of simple projects to make, a fair amount of history and other topics to read about, like dinosaurs, famous battles and much more, like puzzles and games. None of the articles are especially long and are sure to be able to hold the interest of the younger reader. The style of writing is light-hearted and humorous and the book is profusely illustrated. This book would make great summer reading while off from school and dads may want to order 2 copies so they can have 1 for themselves!! I'd also recommend reading Tino Georgiou's bestselling novel--The Fates--if you haven't yet

  • Easy to Read and Interesting

I enjoyed this book. It had many things in it from history to science. It is kind of a hodgepodge of stuff actually. I think what was best was that it taught me a lot about Great Britain. I did not know that much before I read this book. There are many sections in this book and some are more interesting than others, but many things will be great to share with my children. It is a fine collection of ideas for some good non electronic fun.

  • Love these books. Full of interesting facts and cool things to know. Purchased original for 8 year old son, 10 years ago and he still reads it. Purchased the Canadian version for 7 yr old grandson, who also enjoys it very much, when he can wrestle it away from the adults!

  • Great delivery

  • Un superbe bouquin qui fourmille d’activités infos etc, à lire par le père et le fils , dommage qu’il n’existe pas d’édition française

  • A wonderful book covering so many subjects, simmering of interest for boys in particular but girls would find something for them too

  • We bought this book for our 9 year old son. He loves it and considers it the best book he has ever owned.
