Newbery Medal (John Newbery Medal)
Onion John: A Newbery Award Winner – A Story of Friendship Tested by Good Intentions for Kids (Ages 8-12)
A children's novel set in 1950s New Jersey that centers on the friendship between young Andy Rusch and the eccentric hermit Onion John. It explores the gap between communal goodwill and a person's right to live on his own terms.
Work Information
What begins as kindness can still unsettle the life of the person it is meant to help.
Onion John uses a gentle narrative voice to ask whether good intentions actually match the well-being of the person concerned. Seen through a boy's eyes, the town's atmosphere and the adults' assumptions come into focus with unusual clarity.

Great memories!
I remember this book so well from when I was a kid and even the cover illustration evoked memories. Through the years when chopping onions I have thought about Onion John biting into an onion! So happy to read this again, read it with younger generations and pass it on!

Classic
I vividly remember checking this book out of my school library in fifth grade. I bought this for my son who is in the third grade and has become an avid reader. I can’t wait for him to enjoy it as much as I did.

Great Story
I used to have this book in my classroom (I was teaching). I've read it several times, and now my grandchildren are at the age to really enjoy as well.
