The classic Newbery Medal – winning title by beloved author Katherine Paterson, with brand-new bonus materials including an author's note by Katherine herself and a foreword by New York Times bestselling author Kate DiCamillo. Jess Aarons has been practicing all summer so he can be the fastest runner in the fifth grade. And he almost is, until the new girl in school, Leslie Burke, outpaces him. The two become fast friends and spend most days in the woods behind Leslie’s house, where they invent an enchanted land called Terabithia. One morning, Leslie goes to Terabithia without Jess and a tragedy occurs. It will take the love of his family and the strength that Leslie has given him for Jess to be able to deal with his grief. Bridge to Terabithia was also named an ALA Notable Children’s Book and has become a touchstone of children’s literature, as have many of Katherine Paterson’s other novels, including The Great Gilly Hopkins and Jacob Have I Loved.

Reviews

  • Good book

The story was so moving, good for children. It's easy for children to read because the font size is just right.

  • A classic of children's literature

I very much enjoyed re-reading this as an adult. It doesn't have a happy ending, which is rare in children's books, but so true in real life. My children didn't enjoy this when they read it in school (too sad they said), but I found the characters very finely drawn and the rural life so clearly described with just the right details. It's a story of friendship and finding your place when you're different, and although it ends with a loss, it's not about loss per-se, but rather about these other things.

  • Great Book, excellent bridge

I’ve read a lot of books about bridges. Truss bridges, suspension bridges and now I’ve read one about Terabithian Bridges. Not sure about the structural integrity of this bridge…but it’s symbolic integrity is superb. I’ve never been to Terabithia, but based on previous reviews, have now booked Easter weekend there.
