Many readers appreciate its slow arc toward forgiveness and renewal, though those expecting the same force as the first novel may find it more restrained.

Excellent book that really gets into the effects of trauma, from all sides involved, that being the perpetrators, victims and bystanders. Lets you know what they are thinking and feeling. Also the text is written just as a New Zealander would speak, which adds to an interesting and more engrossing read. Check out this series you wont be disappointed.

Really good read. I wanted to read these to know what happened to Jake Heke after the events of Once Were Warriors and this tells it. I would advise reading that first even if you have seen the film as its more complex and layered than the film and introduces some of the characters that feature in this one. I really recommend this as a great story, well told.

I am a big fan of the "Once were Warriors" Trilogy. This is a very enjoyable book.

Alan Duff paints a picture of NZ which I experienced when I practiced medicine there in Maori/Pacific island clinics. Read Once Were Warriors - first. It is always important to try to see a country in all its aspects and it is sad that NZ has never really significantly addressed the inequity that is prevalent - despite government claims to the contrary.
