A Newbery Honor Book - from the author of The White Stag Jancsi is overjoyed to hear that his cousin from Budapest is coming to spend the summer on his father’s ranch on the Hungarian plains. But their summer proves more adventurous than he had hoped when headstrong Kate arrives, as together they share horseback races across the plains, country fairs and festivals, and a dangerous run-in with the gypsies. In vividly detailed scenes and beautiful illustrations, this Newbery Award-winning author presents an unforgettable world and characters who will be remembered forever. “A genuinely joyous and beautiful book.”— The New York Times

Kate Seredy (1899-1975) is the Hungarian-born writer and illustrator of numerous children's books. She won the Newbery Medal, the Newbery Honor, the Caldecott Honor, and the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award.

Reviews

  • Excellent book Excellent seller.

  • The rave reviews of this book are true. Kate Seredy (prounounced SHARE-ed-ee) did a wonderful job on this book. My children (a girl, 9, and a boy, 6) both really loved this book, and it's not always easy to find stories that suit both of them at the same time. To tell the truth, I think my wife and I fully enjoyed the book as much as the children. Buy the hardcover, because it's likely to become a well-worn favorite. I really can't praise Seredy enough on her work in this book - it's full of life, makes good points and lessons, is fun and humorous, a well-told story, and has beautiful charcoal illustrations by the author. (I only wish these drawings were presented in a finer fashion, as befits them. One can only hope this will be remedied in a future edition.) Apparently, Seredy started out as an illustrator of children's books, and only began writing late in her career. Too bad, because she is a master of both crafts, and one suspects there is a strong autobiographical element in the charming but mischievous character of Kate. Whatever its genesis, this is a spellbinding tale. Buy this book - your children will love having it read to them, and you will love reading it.

  • Classic childrens book

  • I love Puffin classics and this book is very easy to read but rather childish. Its sequel,’the singing tree’ is a lot more serious but very sad.

  • I loved this book as a child!! My third grade teacher read this to our class, and I have never forgotten it. I have bought it to share with my future grandchild!!
