To Janey Larkin, the blue willow plate was the most beautiful thing in her life, a symbol of the home she could only dimly remember. Now that her father was an itinerant worker, Janey didn't have a home she could call her own or any real friends, as her family had to keep moving, following the crops from farm to farm. Someday, Janey promised the willow plate, with its picture of a real house, her family would once again be able to set down roots in a community. Blue Willow is an important fictional account of the Dust Bowl and the Great Depression, and has been called The Grapes of Wrath for children. It won a Newbery Honor and many other awards.
Doris Gates was a librarian and writer of children's fiction. Blue Willow was groundbreaking in its use of realistic storytelling for children. Doris Gates is also known for her collections of Greek mythology, including A Fair Wind for Troy .

Das Buch kam doch schneller als erwartet, für mich praktisch da ich es brauchte um einen Aufsatz für die Uni darüber zu schreiben. Die Qualität war gut und top für den Preis.

This book impacted me greatly as a 10-year old. While there were certainly sad and challenging aspects to the life of this book's main character, Janey Larkin, it is a timeless story with life lessons that everyone should learn and embrace. It's hard for me to imagine that anyone's heart couldn't be touched and moved by this story. It's a great book for children and I think also for adults. I've read countless books since first reading Blue Willow, now 55 years ago, and it remains at the top of my list of all-time favorites!

I read this book the first time in grade school. It was interesting as it was descriptive of the conditions of the Great Depression that sent so many of my Great Aunts and Uncles from their farms in Oklahoma to the fields, orchards, and eventually the military factories of WW II in California and Nevada. I saw it mentioned in a history blog and wondered if it was available thru Kindle. Sadly not, but the copy I purchased was in new condition, just like it rolled off the presses a week or two ago. I am curious if the illustrations inside the book were done by a particular artist or by artists from the WPA era. There are so many similarities to the illustrations in the Kate Seredy series and others. This would be a good history lesson for the younger generations.
