Work Information

Amid the landscape of the Andes, a boy comes to understand the pride handed down by his ancestors.

The novel conveys, in a straightforward style, both a respect for Indigenous culture and the joy of a child discovering his place in the world. It combines educational readability with the mysterious atmosphere of the mountains.

Review Summaries

  • It has long been read as a story of cultural continuity and self-discovery, with readers valuing its direct style and the landscape of the Andes. Some also note that its perspective feels dated in places.

Born in Las Vegas, New Mexico, Ann Nolan Clark graduated from New Mexico Highlands University in 1919 with a degree in education. For many years she worked for the US Bureau of Indian Affairs as a teacher of Native American students. After noticing that her Tesuque Pueblo school had scarcely any educational material geared toward Native Americans, she began to write children's books that catered to the language and culture of her students. While traveling through Mexico, Guatemala, Peru, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and Brazil under the employment of the Institute of Inter-American Affairs, Clark was inspired to write her 1953 Newbery Medal–winning book Secret of the Andes .

  • My son read this while we spent 2 weeks jn the andes near machu picchu

Just came back with my 9 year old son and 13 year old daughter from a 3 week trip to PERU (we visited machu picchu twice). I was homeschooling them while on this trip. So before we left i ordered a bunch of fiction and non fiction books about Peru (some to read before, during or after this trip) That being said, this book was interesting to my son and even my daughter wanted to read it. It was informative and it helped prepare my kids for this trip. My son read the bulk of this book while on his OWN ADVENTURE in the sacred valley. Coincidentally, when the boy arrived in cusco, we had just arrived in cusco after spending a week deeper in ollantaytambo. It was so cool to see my 9 year old feel like he was the character. No issues with seller or shipping. Book was as described.
