A Newbery Award winner! Most dolls lead a comfortable but unadventurous life. This was true of Miss Hickory until the fateful day that her owner, Ann, moves from her New Hampshire home to attend school in Boston—leaving Miss Hickory behind. For a small doll whose body is an apple-wood twig and whose head is a hickory nut, the prospect of spending a New Hampshire winter alone is frightening indeed. In this classic modern day fairy tale, what’s a doll to do?
Carolyn Sherwin Bailey was born in Hoosick Falls, New York and spent her childhood in the little Hudson River town of Lansingburg. She studied at Teachers College, Columbia University and the New York School of Social Work and began writing afterward (an activity which eventually produced thirty-five books). The author and her husband, Dr. Eben C. Hill, lived for many years on Hill Farm, in Temple, New Hampshire, whose antiques and apple orchard inspired the Newbery Medal-winning book Miss Hickory (1947).

Miss Hickory

A lovely encouragement for a child to observe nature
A classic. A lot of the author's love of nature woven in a quaint story about a homemade doll. I remembered the doll from my childhood; I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the observations about nature at my current age, rereading it decades later.

This was one of my favorite childhood books and I'm utterly THRILLED to find that it is still in print because when I tried to find it to see if I could gift it to my niece last Christmas, I found it on Amazon and was OVER THE MOON that it is still in print. This book is a masterpiece, and as a best-selling author myself, and an author of children's literature, I can say honestly that this book set the bar so high for me as a child, both with it's magnificent writing and charming illustrations, Miss Hickory is one of the reasons I grew up to be a novelist and illustrator, as well as an animal communicator. The book is a miracle and I'd suggest that every mom of a young girl make sure that this book is front and center on your library shelf. --Amelia Kinkade, author of Whispers From the Wild: Listening to Voices From The Animal Kingdom (New World Library), and The Winged One (CreateSpace.)
