Review Summaries
-
Its quiet atmosphere and the way it builds the image of the fog are widely appreciated. Some readers find the pacing slow or the fantasy deliberately understated, but many value the lingering aftertaste.

A Newbery Honor Book. Greta had always loved the fog—the soft gray mist that rolled in from the sea and drifted over the village. The fog seemed to have a secret to tell her. Then one day when Greta was walking in the woods and the mist was closing in, she saw the dark outline of a stone house against the spruce trees—a house where only an old cellar hole should have been. Then she saw a surrey come by, carrying a lady dressed in plum-colored silk. The woman beckoned for Greta to join her, and soon Greta found herself launched on an adventure that would take her back to a past that existed only through the magic of the fog.
Julia Sauer was a writer of children's fiction and a librarian. Two of her books, Fog Magic and The Light at Tern Rock were among the annual Newbery Medal runners-up. Both are set in Canada, where Sauer frequently vacationed.

I love this book. I used to own it as a kid and with my recent vacation to the East Coast all I wanted to do was read this book when I got back. I ordered it on Monday and received it today, TWO DAYS LATER. I am completely impressed, the book is in mint condition and ready to be read. Thanks amazon & thank you Julia L. Sauer (:

This is a wonderful book for children, especially girls maybe about 12, so they see the wonders of growing up and know about looking back when they get older, and have wonderful memories. It has reminded me of my memories as I read about Greta and her adventure over the mountain.

This exquisite little book introduces young readers to the concept of time travel ("magic") in the immortal style of "what happened next" that keeps the reader avidly turning page after page. The setting of the village of Little Valley (in real life Little River) in southwest Nova Scotia is not only a beautiful one but even more interesting because the author, Julia Sauer, spent many happy times there and the stories are based on both folklore and actual events of the people who lived there. Many people will know how exciting and mysterious fog can be and the author uses this concept beautifully to weave the story. The central character Greta is a most likeable and interesting child with a blend of boldness and obedience, spontaneity and thoughtfulness. My only reasons for 4 stars not 5 is that the locations are quite difficult to follow and a map would have been very useful, that some of the concepts of time travel could be difficult to follow for some readers and that some of the stories remain unfinished and young readers usually like to have a satisfactory conclusion. However I stress that these are very minor issues. Overall Julia Sauer has written a truly magical book and I recommend it highly.

I have read this book 4 times!!! While the mystery ends, the memory does not. I loved the pleasant surprise at the end.
