Selected Poems (Modern European Poets S.)

Gunnar Ekelöf

A sequence of poems shaped by Byzantine myth and religious imagery, it weaves themes of divinity, suffering, and love into a fragmented and dreamlike mode of expression. As the starting point of Ekelöf’s later Diwan trilogy, it condenses his experimental spirit and symbolic intensity.

Work Information

The starting point of the Diwan trilogy, where myth and prayer intersect.

A representative poetry sequence from Gunnar Ekelöf’s late work, it uses the Byzantine world as a medium to connect personal vision with universal suffering. As the first part of a trilogy, it occupies a crucial place in relation to the later Sagan om Fatumeh and Vägvisare till underjorden.

Review Summaries

  • Its mythic structure and pervasive symbolism are highly praised. Some readers point to its difficulty, but many treat it as a high point of Ekelöf’s late work.

Reviews

  • Gunnar Ekelof - toward the end of his career - approximated a purity of style with: simple language and highly intense, historically, philosophically, and theologically aware symbolism. This yielded an amazing translatability. His poems speak to the universal unconscious and their elegance and beauty is a testament to a lifetime spent in search and manifestation. To say he is a neglected poet is truly correct, since many less translatable poets find their voice in many more languages across the world! These selections are a treat, forming part of the "Byzantine Tryptich". Three spooky volumes of incredibly lovely and gorgeous writing any library would do well to have! Highly recommended!!!!
