You've never met anyone quite like Rufus Moffat. He gets things done, but he gets them done his way. When he wants to check out library books, Rufus teaches himself to write...even though he doesn't yet know how to read. When food is scarce, he plants some special "Rufus beans" that actually grow...despite his digging them up every day to check on them. And Rufus has friends that other people don't even know exist! He discovers the only invisible piano player in town, has his own personal flying horse for a day, and tours town with the Cardboard Boy, his dearest friend-and enemy. Rufus isn't just the youngest Moffat, he's also the cleverest, the funniest, and the most unforgettable. Eleanor Estes's beloved Moffats stories are being published in new editions as Odyssey/Harcourt Young Classics. The original interior illustrations have been retained, but handsome new cover art by Tricia Tusa gives the books a fresh, timeless appeal for today's readers.
Eleanor Estes (1906-1988) grew up in West Haven, Connecticut, which she renamed Cranbury for her classic stories about the Moffat and Pye families. A children’s librarian for many years, she launched her writing career with the publication of The Moffats in 1941. Two of her outstanding books about the Moffats— Rufus M. and The Middle Moffat —were awarded Newbery Honors, as was her short novel The Hundred Dresses. She won the Newbery Medal for Ginger Pye.

A classic book. We bought the hardback, an original, as a gift for my grandson to enjoy as a 7-8 year old. But to my surprise the not quite three year old insisted I read it to him and loves the stories in this book so much he ‘reads’ it when he is having rest time. I got the paperback to preserve the fragile pages of the original copy. I didn’t expect the chapter book to captivate a toddler but it has. My mom read it to me, I read it to my daughter, and now she and I read it to her son.

Rufus Moffat has been a part of me for going on 50 years. It's impossible to say just how greatly this book influenced my perceptions, reading, writing, play or work ethics, but Rufus undisputedly had a positive effect on them all. I recently purchased this and the other Moffat books for my granddaughter, and when I began reading them to her, I was transported once again to another time...or two...it certainly brought back childhood memories, and, once again, I was swept into the reality of the US home front during World War II. And my granddaughter, born at the turn of the 21st century, was just as captivated by Rufus Moffat as I, born as history was drawing that chapter to a close. It is probably a host of other protocols which fascinates my granddaughter rather than the ones which grabbed me as a child. She lives in a world where children seldom move about unsupervised in their neighborhoods, and the freedom which Rufus takes for granted is something she can only imagine. Yet there are enough similarities between her life and that of the Moffats to make the story engaging and believable. For instance, my granddaughter's parents repair antique pianos and often install Playmations in them, so the chapter, "The Invisible Piano Player" really amused her on a personal level. And her mother raises a garden every summer, so she knew firsthand about planting beans and then digging them up again to see if they had sprouted. Some things span across time, regardless of whether they seem archaic. Kids need a window on other eras, other lifestyles, other socioeconomic strata. This book is a good bridge to some of those things. It's warm. It's funny. It's full of human failings, triumphs, frustrations, joys, selfless acts, solid family values and good, old-fashioned imagination. I highly recommend Rufus Moffat!

This is such an enjoyable book. I wish I'd known about it when my kids were little - it's a great read aloud story. It's about a family of kids growing up in the years just before, & during WW 1. It gives a great picture of what life was like back then - a nostalgic look at a simpler time. The kids are delightful, their various adventures are funny, entertaining, and heartwarming. A real treasure - I loved it.

I bought this series for my daughter the summer after her 1st grade. She could read well and this book is very charming and easy for her to read, albeit sometimes the story could be a little boringly long. There's no hard vocabulary and the background is simple. The only thing we didn't like was the chapter about baseball. We literally know nothing about how to play baseball so this long chapter is hard to finish with so much details about the sports. Other than that, it was clever, humorous, and full of surprises all through the book. The author seems so interested in children's mindset that it is as if she has never outgrown it herself. I can't admire her more for having so vividly depicted the Moffats kids' inner thoughts. The series is wonderful, funny and adventurous as much as as her another books about the Pye family. Read it!
