Work Information

During a night of unrest, the distance between neighbors gradually narrows.

Even in the midst of unrest, the simple act of searching for cats reconnects people to one another. The restrained text and forceful illustrations give the story its emotional clarity.

In a night of rioting, Daniel and his mother are forced to leave their apartment for the safety of a shelter. “Diaz has not been afraid to take risks in illustrating the story with thickly textured paintings against a background of torn-paper and found-object collage. Without becoming cluttered or gimmicky, these pictures manage to capture a calamitous atmosphere that finally calms. . . . Both author and artist have managed to portray a politically charged event without pretense or preaching.”-- The Bulletin

  • Five Stars

    Lovely

  • Beautiful book. Beautiful story.

The illustrations were both gritty and beautiful. And there was a poignant moral to the story as well.

  • Great picture book!

This book was a great read for my 5th grade classroom. It sparked great conversations among my students. Amazon shipped it quickly, and I received it with plenty of time to spare!
