The last gnomes in Britain live by a Warwickshire brook. Their names are Dodder, Baldmoney, Cloudberry, and Sneezewort, and their home is under an oak tree which grows on the banks of the Folly. Cloudberry decides to go and explore - he wants to find out what lies beyond the Folly. But when he doesn't return, it is up to his three remaining brothers to build a boat and set out to find him. This is the story of the brothers' epic journey in search of Cloudberry and is set against the background of the English countryside, beginning in spring, continuing through summer, and concluding in autumn, when the first frosts are starting to arrive.

I enjoyed the beautiful language and descriptions in this story. The little grey men are so well developed as characters that they come to life on the pages. If you have children or grandchildren who love to explore nature, this is a must read. I read a chapter a night to my great niece and nephew who live on the east coast. When they take their walks in the woods - they now look to see if a little grey man might have passed their way. This is a mystical adventure story - perfect for a read aloud or an independent reader who enjoys the secrets he/she might discover right in their own back woods.
