タイトルになっているキーワードの「リバーボーイ」が読んでいる間中、ずっと不思議な感覚でついてくる物語。 病に倒れた祖父を連れて、両親とともに、人里離れたコテージにやってきたジェス。そこは、祖父が子ども時代を過ごした土地であった。死を間近に意識している祖父は画家として最後の作品「リバーボーイ」をそこで完成させたいと望んでいる。その願いをかなえてあげたいと思うジェスと、容態を気遣って、入院を勧める大人達。やがて、ジェスが不思議な少年と出会うところから、物語は展開し始める。 少女の心の成長や、祖父の秘密、そして家族のつながり、様々な要素が、川の流れの中で、混ざり合うように、物語は終局に向かって行く。 英語は読みやすく、何といっても、続きが気になってやめられない。私の場合、英語で読んだために、「リバーボーイ」の不思議な感覚がついてきたような気がします。

水泳が趣味の女の子。頑固者のおじいちゃんが最近弱ってきたのが心配。休暇で田舎に行き，川で泳いでいると不思議な少年に出会い…という話。オチは予測できるのですが，泣けます。一発ネタでなく，そこに至る物語の流れ，細やかな描写がいい。家族の絆もの。また運動音痴にも泳ぐことの爽快さが伝わってくる。派手な話ではないのに，気がつくと引き込まれていて，一日で読みました（あまり長くないのも有難い）。カーネギー賞受賞作です。 邪道ながら，購入に際しては装丁の力も大きかったです。他の版の方が少し安いのだけど，このOxford版の装丁のシンプルなカッコ良さ。持ってるだけで楽しくなります。

Thoroughly enjoyed the mystery of this story. Brilliantly written; children and adults are likely to enjoy this. It is timeless fiction.

Lovely warm soulful easy read book, I believe it's for teenagers.....I am an adult and found it a pleasant change to read a book like this and have gone on to purchase 3 more of tim bowler books :)
