Author Jack Beatty's biography on the life of Boston's most colorful mayors. Anyone who is a student of political history will find this book fascinating whether or not you were a fan of James Michael Curley or the Curley-style politics. Depending on your point of view, you can be the judge as to whether he was helpful in establishing the Irish as a political force in early Brahmin Boston or an embarrassment in later years. Based on his many years in public life and the many election victories (as well as many defeats) he was a constant on the Boston political scene helping many people as well as himself.

If you ever want to read a book about the political history of Boston this is the book for you. Well written, insightful, factual, and frightening. The influence of the Irish on the political scene in Boston is here. Highly recommend for any politician or someone thinking about how the City of Boston was created politically. Easy to follow and read. If you live in Boston you will want to visit Curley's home on the Jamaicaway afterwards.

If you are looking for the quintessential book on 20th Century politics in the northeast, this is the book for you. Wonderfully detailed and filled with anecdotes of the Irish/Catholic political scene in Boston during the height of the immigration from Europe of the masses. Curley was a political genius and a gifted fighter for "his people". A "rascal" no doubt, but a wonderful mayor, congressman and governor. God bless his soul, this "Rascal King".

It’s a very lengthy story, but defines American politics throughout the 20th century with insight rarely seen. A very thought provoking analysis of life in America.
