Work Information

Within faith itself, the boundary between obedience and rebellion slowly gives way.

The 1968 Miles Franklin Award winner, this novel draws on Thomas Keneally’s experience as a seminarian. Set in a 1960s Roman Catholic diocese, it stages the tension around faith, institution, and the unease of a younger generation.

Review Summaries

  • It is received as a novel that handles the clash between faith and institution with delicacy and humor, and its character work is often praised against the scale of its theme.

  • The struggle of a young priest who can neither submit to authority nor easily resist it is read not only as religious fiction but as a broader dilemma of the individual inside an institution. It is also seen as satirical and still worth rereading across time.

Reviews

  • The book cake exactly as expected re delivery and conditions and I liked the authenticity of its condition, added something to the Mystique

  • Disappointed in the ending. Thought there would be a more thoughtful and meaning full ending.
