These poems usher in a new and exciting voice to British poetry — a third woman to add to the successful Next Generation Poets list — thrillingly tender and erotic, attuned to the nerve-endings of love and loss.

Helen Farish has won the Forward Poetry Prize for best first collection and been shortlisted for the T.S.Eliot Prize. She lives in Cumbria and was Poet-in-Residence at the Wordsworth Trust, Grasmere in 2004.

Reviews

  • Truly one of the best collections of poetry out there. If you are tempted to buy it, do: you won't be disappointed. I have already bought two copies for friends and can't seem to stop giving my copies away. 'Intimates' is almost too good to keep! There is a 'right'ness to Farish's words, and she really knows, like all great poets, how to end a poem superbly. Her work is truly stunning, an absolute joy to read. This is my favourite poem from the book: The Lighthouse of Nauset was removed to a field. Visitors wonder does it miss the tides, living on the edge of emptiness then fullness? Here there is only the tickle of a cricket, an out-of-the-way dusk. The lighthouse says, Listen. I thought I had no limits, could look indefinitely at the longing light lays on water. Now I want boundaries; a hedge, plums, more than enough.

  • superb poems....hitting the key rites of passage
