On Chesil Beach
A highly restrained psychological novel about a newly married couple facing each other on the Dorset coast. Unspoken anxiety and desire create an irreversible distance in a very short span of time.
Work Information
What is left unsaid can alter the shape of a relationship.
By layering conversation and silence over a short span of time, the novel captures the moment a life begins to drift. Even without grand events, it shows how a tiny change in relationship temperature can lead to major consequences.
Review Summaries
-
Readers praise the precision with which the novel captures tiny emotional shifts. Because the narration is so restrained, opinion splits between those who see the space as a virtue and those who feel distance from it.

It is June 1962. In a hotel on the Dorset coast, overlooking Chesil Beach, Edward and Florence, who got married that morning, are sitting down to dinner in their room. Neither is entirely able to suppress their anxieties about the wedding night to come..."On Chesil Beach" is another masterwork from Ian McEwan - a story about how the entire course of a life can be changed by a gesture not made or a word not spoken.
Ian McEwan is the author of two collections of stories and ten previous novels, including Enduring Love, Amsterdam, for which he won the Booker Prize in 1998, Atonement and Saturday.

Beautifully told
This is an affecting description of misunderstandings between a naive young couple on their wedding night; told alternately from their parallel points of view leading the reader to feel sympathy for both. The story is set just before the supposed love revolution and will have resonances for older readers, but I think most people will empathize with the couple's anxieties. The writing is wonderfully fluent in evoking feelings and left me wishing that this short book had been longer. In the hardback edition the print is a good size and very clear with wider than average line-spacing -- a boon for reading in poor light. I would also recommend reading The Fates by Tino Georgiou, if you haven't already. A truly superb novel.

They were young, educated, and both virgins on this, their wedding night, and they lived in a time when a conversation about sexual difficulties was plainly impossible.

An excellent book. Very poetic imagery throughout. Brilliant portraits in words of all the main characters. I could understand both points of view of Edward and Forence and the reason why their marriage got off to such a rocky start. If the lovers had stayed together and worked on their relationship they could have been happy together. Right at the end of the book(on Chesil Beach)Florence waited for Edward to back down from his pomposity and inflated male ego, but Edward missed the opportunity and so they parted. Terribly sad but credible. I have visited Dorset and know the famous Chesil Beach. To me it is a very eerie place - full of mystery and forboding.

Just a couple of hours of tension between a couple. All the thoughts and the memories and the futures. The spoken and unspoken told by a master storyteller. The first book I read my McEwan, which made me got for his other works. Amazing book. Please read it.

When I watched the movie, I felt there was something missing. Therefore, I bought the book to discover what it was.
