An in-depth story of family and life as a cossack in Russia before, during and after WW1
I'm half way through and this tale us very engaging. Lots if characters w similar names yet I keep finding the story olli g me along. I e read a number of Russian authors to date - Turgenov and Tolstoy- this is definitely an equivalent to those two. As I read through, I do wonder how the original Russian version read and if the translation is helping or hindering... Great book - i had lost an old copy on a plane ride last year and had to get a new copy which I'm quite happy I did.

A Landmark In World Literature
This is one of the great books in world literature. When I read that some compared it to War and Peace I was somewhat skeptical. I'd heard about this novel back in college when I studied Russian history, and I thought since it was written during the Communist Era it would have been censured and turned into propaganda. But that is not the case. The novel tells the story of the Don Cossacks, from pre World War I, through the war, then into the Russian Revolution and the Civil War that followed. I would compare it with Dr. Zhivago in terms of the characters being pushed and pulled along by historical forces they can't control, and the choices they have to make. It is not an easy read but if you are willing to take the time, it is definitely worth it.
