  • Enjoyable read

Good story well written at a good pace. The descriptions of the Middle East were very realistic and helped make the story believable.

  • An exciting, spellbinding account of Man of Commerce trapped into aiding a terrorist

So well written! And it does it without overly explicit romantic episodes or horribly detailed scenes of violent confrontation. Eric Ambler paints a wonderful word picture of a crisis filled life experience that feels so real that there is little need for "suspension of your sense of reality". Though this book is from the 1970's it bears very closely upon the Middle East tension of today.

  • I received a pre-proof copy with an irritating mis-transliteration of the villain/hero's name but that apart very happy to have

Not finished it yet, but its is shaping up as a standard (high quality) Ambler suspense. I received a pre-proof copy with an irritating mis-transliteration of the villain/hero's name but that apart very happy to have it in my library.

  • Captivating

It's an excellent and captivating spy/crime novel. I read it in one go.

  • 50 Years later it's still relevant

The Levanter continues the author's USP of the hero or antihero caught up in something not of his making but from which there is no avoiding. The book is about a mixed nationality Syrian businessman stuck between being forced to work for a violent Palestinian group, his uneasy relationship with the government and the Israel Mossad. He knows his family business in the country is probably finished forever but can he and his family survive at all? A fascinating story and still has much relevance today. Does anything really ever change?
