Great as usual!
This story is one of my favorite. The writing is so enjoyable and I love the sense of humour of Morse character.

It wasn't what I expected
I watched Morse and Endeavour and I expected more of this book, I think it could be the less interesting book of this character.

Very, very interesting !
This is a wonderful book as I expected. I saw it on the tv long time ago and wished to read it. John Thaw did such a great job playing Morse that while reading, I always imagined him as the main character. I like the plot, the humor, everything. Of course when solving a case you need some luck too, especially when it is that much cold. I recommend to see this tv episode of inspector Morse after done reading, because they complement each other. The book has more information, and the tv episode follows the line well, using some director's freedom, but not dropping the ball. The tv version also paid some more attention to the shoes, mentioned so many times in the novel. There was a nother book writen before on similar topic that was the inspiration behind "The wench is dead". I understand there was some difference in interpretation of the proof and events between that author and Colin Dexter. This appears in the novel when Morse reads that book and gets interested in the case. In the tv version those two positions are both given, as an actual debate between the author and Morse.

I loved this book
I loved this book. Uniquely the author takes us into the past and we gain an insight into the lifestyle of the boatmen on the canals in the Victorian era. The flashbacks to the past really work and Morse is at his very best, albeit immobile in a hospital bed, at asking the pertinent question. You really begin to care that the truth is found, a truth which is beautifully unravelled. Dexter gives the reader clues throughout and up until the last page the reader is not left disappointed.
