Alternately disturbing and hilarious, unbelievable and shatteringly convincing, Amélie Nothomb's Fear and Trembling will keep readers clutching tight to the pages of this taut little novel, caught up in the throes of fear, trembling, and, ultimately, delight. According to ancient Japanese protocol, foreigners deigning to approach the emperor did so only with fear and trembling. Terror and self-abasement conveyed respect. Amélie, our well-intentioned and eager young Western heroine, goes to Japan to spend a year working at the Yumimoto Corporation. Returning to the land where she was born is the fulfillment of a dream for Amélie; working there turns into comic nightmare.
Amelie Nothomb 's novels are international bestsellers. Belgian by birth, she lives in Paris. Her novel Fear and Trembling (Griffin) was made into a successful film in France.

Short fun read on a European working girl in Japan
I read Stupeur et Tremblement in French using this translation if required. In both languages it is a really fun read with acute observations of Japanese work culture. The narrator is Amelie herself, recounting her real- life experiences. She spent a year in Japan working in a large corporation experiencing multiple mishaps and humiliations. Most of these are played out by the hand of her immediate superior, Fubuki. Fubuki is aloof, beautiful and haughty, with an edge of cruelty towards Amelie. Amelie writes wittily without a hint of self-pity as she gradually works out her place in this world – at the bottom, from where she looks up at Fubuki with a mix of adoration and bemusement. What clips I have seen of the film suggests that it has the characters spot on.
