Can't Stop Won't Stop is a powerful cultural and social history of the end of the American century, and a provocative look into the new world that the hip-hop generation created. Forged in the fires of the Bronx and Kingston, Jamaica, hip-hop became the Esperanto of youth rebellion and a generation-defining movement. In a post-civil rights era defined by deindustrialization and globalization, hip-hop crystallized a multiracial, polycultural generation's worldview, and transformed American politics and culture. But that epic story has never been told with this kind of breadth, insight, and style. Based on original interviews with DJs, b-boys, rappers, graffiti writers, activists, and gang members, with unforgettable portraits of many of hip-hop's forebears, founders, and mavericks, including DJ Kool Herc, Afrika Bambaataa, Chuck D, and Ice Cube, Can't Stop Won't Stop chronicles the events, the ideas, the music, and the art that marked the hip-hop generation's rise from the ashes of the 60's into the new millennium.

Jeff Chang has been a hip-hop journalist for more than a decade and has written for The San Francisco Chronicle, The Village Voice, Vibe, The Nation, URB, Rap Pages, Spin, and Mother Jones. He was a founding editor of Colorlines Magazine, senior editor at Russell Simmons's 360hiphop.com, and cofounder of the influential hip-hip label SoleSides, now Quannum Projects. He lives in California.

  • Connected!

Purchased this book for a project that I was working on, in hopes of gaining some insight into the philosophy behind Hip Hop Culture. It was all there and more! Now that I know who DJ Herc is it makes perfect sense --- as he is the GodFather of Hip Hop ---who better to share insights with us on Hip Hop Culture? Highly recommended!

  • Great book, all accurate accounts!

Great book! I'm a teacher, so I give hip-hop lectures. I also teach dance and I'm an accomplished DJ. And this book is great for anyone who wants the intricate details of early hip hop culture to teach or just learn for themselves. I know a lot of the pioneer individuals who are featured in this book they're good friends of mine and the stories are all accurate and real as I have spoken to them myself from time to time about different happenings. So get this book read it and get your hip hop knowledge up.
