What happens when something is sucked into a black hole? Does it disappear? Three decades ago, a young physicist named Stephen Hawking claimed it did, and in doing so put at risk everything we know about physics and the fundamental laws of the universe. Most scientists didn't recognize the import of Hawking's claims, but Leonard Susskind and Gerard t'Hooft realized the threat, and responded with a counterattack that changed the course of physics. The Black Hole War is the thrilling story of their united effort to reconcile Hawking's revolutionary theories of black holes with their own sense of reality -- effort that would eventually result in Hawking admitting he was wrong, paying up, and Susskind and t'Hooft realizing that our world is a hologram projected from the outer boundaries of space. A brilliant book about modern physics, quantum mechanics, the fate of stars and the deep mysteries of black holes, Leonard Susskind's account of the Black Hole War is mind-bending and exhilarating reading.
Leonard Susskind has been the Felix Bloch Professor in theoretical physics at Stanford University since 1978. The author of The Cosmic Landscape , he is a member of the National Academy of Science and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the recipient of numerous prizes including the science writing prize of the American Institute of Physics for his Scientific American article on black holes. He lives in Palo Alto, California.

Luxurious meeting with physics
More than three years has passed since I met this book and Stephen Hawking's work. Although I expected quite a demanding reading , the book makes me feel that they are not for only specialists of this kind, it is for all. There is not so much jargon. Each science vocabularies have very easy explanations, a page turner. Simply, curiosity for sci- fi took me to the world of non fiction physics. Exciting , interesting , even though the fact of the Black Hole is serious for the earth. However, it was hard for me to understand Quantum Mechanics. It might be a stumbling block of also some of the readers, though , before thinking your retreat , please notice the importance , depth of the theory and try to savour it . When I finished the reading, I feel mighty fascination as well as actual difficulties of science. The lectures of physics are really familiar with us these days. Long black boards , incredible distance of formulas. Before the goal , there is a long journey of figures ,symbols and signs. They are absolutely the gift of the human brains. As if it is the procession of logical art ... it is magnificent! It may be a bit of a luxurious , we can be enough informed the result of significant academic work with such attractive style. It is The Universe ! Some day , the time would come , when we have to analyse their theories in more urgency.

Its really awesome book ...its explains the concepts so smoothly and in a manner that one faces no problem in understanding and reading the same line over and over again . At one shot the things are clear as crystals.

Really great book. A little on the layman side of things with overly simple examples so everyone can follow along. If you are a beginner with physics or don't have a strong math background, than this would be a great book for you. If you are more of an expert in the area than a lot of the information may seem redundant. It really is a good read regardless as the interplay between Susskind and Hawking, along with his partner t'Hooft was neat to follow. Highly recommend for blackhole fanatics!
