In the 1950s Robert Coles began studying, living among, and, above all, listening to American children. The results of his efforts--revealed in five volumes published between 1967 and 1977--constitute one of the most searching and vigorous social studies ever undertaken by one person in the United States. Here, heard often in their own voices, are America's "children of crisis": African American children caught in the throes of the South's racial integration; The children of impoverished migrant workers in Appalachia; Children whose families were transformed by the migration from South to North, from rural to urban communities; Latino, Native American, and Eskimo children in the poorest communities of the American West; The children of America's wealthiest families confronting the burden of their own privilege. This volume restores to print a masterwork of psychological and sociological inquiry--a book that, in its focus on how children learn and develop in the face of rapid change and social upheaval, speaks directly and pointedly to our own times. Robert Coles is a professor of psychiatry and medical humanities at the Harvard Medical School, a research psychiatrist for the Harvard University Health Services, and the James Agee Professor of Social Ethics at Harvard College. ________________________________________ In the 1950s Robert Coles began studying, living among, and, above all, listening to American children & their parents.

Reviews

  • Inspiring

This book is made up of selections from the Pulitzer Prize-winning five-volume series based on Coles' taped interviews with children and their parents across the country in the `60s and `70s. What inspires me about Coles is his willingness and capacity to respectfully listen. The honesty and depth of the stories he was told are obviously a result of the trust he engendered. Through the voices of migrant worker, sharecropper, mountaineer, Eskimo, Chicano, Indian, Black, and White in this book I learned what living poor is like "on the ground," and it is tough. However, the final volume is on the children of the wealthy, and wealth is no easy road for a child either. In many ways parents focused on protecting their wealth and privilege are poorer parents than those having to scramble for their livelihood. Coles puts his psychiatry in a sociological context allowing us to see more clearly our nation's weaknesses as well as its strengths.

  • A hard read

Not hard to read regarding the text, that is very accessible. But very tough to read the history of some of the most hopeless children that the author has tracked, and counselled for many years. Most of the children in crisis are American in this in depth, psychological investigation of children's reactions through post slavery, desegregation, and beyond. Looking closely at all the ensuing problems that dogged children, generation after generation. I could only read it in small doses as it was so tough to learn of such despair, but also vital to know of this historical information.

  • Children of Crisis By Robert Coles

Excellent in depth qualitative study. Robert Coles does an excellent job! The book is a solid read promoting transformative perspective of many of the lost voices in late 1960's U.S. history. Rich and "thick" detail provide you with a very vivid image of the struggles and journies of each of the case study participants; giving you a feeling of being present and in there with each and every one of them. This has got to be one of my most favorite books ever read.

  • I have a range of emotions from sad to inspired to impact the world in a meaningful

This book is insightful and well written. Is shares the stories of children from all across this country. It also highlights different qualitative research methods that are practical and user friendly. Everytime I open the book to , I have a range of emotions from sad to inspired to impact the world in a meaningful way.

  • As beautiful as it is informative

This book is so beautiful and full of love for humanity. The style is readable but elevated, almost literary. I wish it were short enough for everyone to want to try.
