Review Summaries

  • Readers generally find it an accessible children's biography that quickly conveys Louisa May Alcott's character and family background. Some, however, feel that the prose sounds dated and somewhat plain.

Reviews

  • A story told and retold via the motion picture.

A Newbery medal winner. Little Women is based on the life of Louisa Alcott.

  • Lovely biography.

Loved how this book shared the history of one of our families favorite authors. Very interesting to read about her connections with Ralph Emerson, and Henry David Thoreau. Good for ages 8 and up.

  • For Little Women lovers!

If you love Little Women, you will love this book too!

  • A readable biography written for children in the 1930s

I'm surprised that this book is out of print. It was quite famous in its day. I was glad to be able to find a used copy. I've been a fan of Louisa May Alcott for 60 years, and have read all her works, I think, including her adult novel Moods (both versions), her Hospital Sketches, and her sensation stories, as well as her letters. There wasn't a lot in this biography that was new to me, but it was well told and engaging. My only frustration was the gentle way she dealt with the exasperating Bronson Alcott, but I suppose MIss Alcott would have approved, since she seemed to have forgiven her father for his failings. He wasn't unkind on purpose, but the story about how his hungry wife and daughters had to put in long days trying to get the harvest in while he sat around and talked philosophy with the guys was maddening. I wish this had been available on kindle.

  • Great biography for young readers

I read this book when I was in third grade and loved it! I had read Little Women and Little Men. .My granddaughter and I went to see a production of Little Women. I have a set of Louisa May Alcott books that were my mother's and thought the biography would be a fitting part. Can't wait for my granddaughter to read all of the books!
