For several years now, Kathleen Jamie's work has addressed two principal concerns: how we negotiate with the natural world, and how we should define our conduct within family and society. In The Tree House Jamie argues - as Burns did before her - for an engagement of the whole being through a kind of practical earthly spirituality. These often startling encounters with animals, birds, and other humans propose a way of living which recognises the earth as home to many different consciousnesses -- and a means of authentic engagement with ‘this, the only world’. Together they form one of the most powerful poetic statements of recent years.
Kathleen Jamie was born in the west of Scotland in 1962. Her poetry collection The Tree House won both the Forward Prize and the Scottish Book of the Year Award. Mr and Mrs Scotland are Dead was shortlisted for the 2003 International Griffin Prize. Her most recent collection, The Overhaul , was shortlisted for the T. S. Eliot Prize 2012 and won the Costa Poetry Award 2012. Kathleen Jamie’s non-fiction books include the highly regarded Findings and Sightlines . She is Chair of Creative Writing at Stirling University, and lives with her family in Fife.
Reviews
-
A great friend of mine, who knows these things, described Kathleen Jamie as 'perhaps the best British contemporary poet'. I don't pretend to her depth of knowledge, but for me, this collection is peerless. A profound understanding of human beings as a part of the whole living world underpins Jamie's vision> Her language moves easily between the earthy and the ethereal. She's a bit like Mary Oliver for grown-ups - she has a broader vision and is less prone to sentiment. Every image is authentic and precise, every poem, accessible yet profound, spiritual without being sentimental or religious.
-
A fine first collection of poems that bring nature into focus with an economy of words and vivid imagery. This collection is a beautiful creation by a poet very much in tune with her craft and art.
-
Beautiful poetry about nature and humanity in this ugly inhumane time.
-
The book has arrived on time and in very good conditions!
-
For someone who loves Scotland , it is a great and poetic book, which I can truly recommend. Kathleen Jamie is a Scottish patriot.
