#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ? NEWBERY MEDAL WINNER ? NATIONAL BOOK AWARD WINNER The triumphant modern classic for readers of all ages, Holes is an unforgettable story of adventure, redemption, and coming of age. Stanley Yelnats’s family has a history of bad luck, so he isn’t too surprised when a miscarriage of justice sends him to a boys’ juvenile detention center, Camp Green Lake. But there is no lake—it has been dry for over a hundred years—and it’s hardly a camp: as punishment, the boys must each dig a hole a day, five feet deep, five feet across, in the hard earth of the dried-up lake bed. The warden claims that this pointless labor builds character, but that’s a lie. Stanley must try to dig up the truth. In this wonderfully inventive, compelling novel that is both serious and funny, Louis Sachar weaves a narrative puzzle about crime and punishment that tangles and untangles, until it becomes clear that the hand of fate has been at work in the lives of the characters—and their forebears—for generations. Praise for Holes : “Wildly inventive.” — The New York Times Book Review “[A] rugged, engrossing adventure.” — Kirkus Reviews “A can't-put-it-down read.” — The Bulletin ? “Dazzling.” — Publishers Weekly , starred review ? “Heartrending.” — The Horn Book , starred review ? “Brilliant.” — School Library Journal , starred review “A joyful, eerie tour de force.” — The Boston Sunday Globe

Reviews

  • my best book

It was very readable, I reccomended it

  • Holes by Louis Sachar is a heartwarming, mysterious, and gripping story. Stanley Yelnats, who is the main character, has a poor family and his dad tries to recycle old shoes to make a fortune. The story begins with Stanley "stealing" a famous sport player's shoes. He goes to court and gets two choices. Jail or Camp Green lake. Stanley chooses camp Green Lake. At the camp he had to dig 5 feet holes. For me, the most powerful part of the story was when Stanley makes a friend, Zero, he makes a deal with him. Zero was the fastest digger at Camp Green Lake, but Zero never learned how to read. The deal that Stanley made with Zero was if Zero digs part of his hole Stanley had to dig, Stanley would teach Zero how to read. I thought this was the most powerful part of the book because this is the start of their relationship and it gets better throughout the story. The theme of the story, which is friends stay together, relates to us. For example when Zero got sick Stanley took Zero up a mountain and fed him onions. This book teaches us to never leave a friend behind. I would strongly recommend Holes to third graders and up who like mystery, and adventure stories.

  • Louis Sachar's Holes is a beloved classic in children's literature, and for good reason. This novel is a masterclass in storytelling, combining elements of adventure, mystery, and social commentary to create an engaging and memorable narrative that appeals to readers of all ages. Initially recommended to me by an author of a writing tutorial book, Holes quickly struck a chord with its familiar yet fresh storytelling. I soon realized that I had seen the movie adaptation of Holes, which only deepened my appreciation for Sachar's original work. As the writing tutorial author suggested, this book is a treasure trove of writing techniques, making it an excellent study for aspiring writers. The story follows Stanley Yelnats, a boy who is wrongfully sent to a labor camp where he and other boys are forced to dig holes in the desert. The plot masterfully weaves together multiple storylines, including the history of Stanley's family curse and the mysterious outlaw Kissing Kate Barlow. Through these interwoven tales, Sachar explores themes of fate, justice, and redemption. What makes Holes particularly remarkable is its accessibility. The language is straightforward and clear, making it easy for younger readers to follow, while the depth of the narrative ensures that older readers remain engaged. The characters are well-developed and relatable, each with their unique quirks and backstories that add richness to the plot.

  • red it in two sittings, couldn't put it down. quite a bizarre premise on one hand but fascinating at the same time. No plot spoliers here, just resd it - you wont regret it.

  • the book was amazing, the plot was amazing, everything was amazing

  • This book is such a timeless classic! Holes is engaging from the very first chapter and keeps you hooked all the way through. The story is clever, funny, emotional, and full of unexpected twists that tie together perfectly by the end. I loved how easy it is to follow while still having depth and meaning. It teaches powerful lessons about friendship, perseverance, family, and doing the right thing — without feeling preachy. The characters are memorable, and the storyline keeps both kids and adults interested. Perfect for independent reading, classroom reading, or family read-aloud time. If you’re looking for a book that’s entertaining, meaningful, and hard to put down, this one is a must-have for your collection! ⭐ Highly recommend for ages 8+ and even adults who love a good story.
