読みやすい英語
なりゆきで銀行強盗を捕まえてしまったタクシー運転手のEd。 その翌日から、彼の元に謎のメッセージが届き始める。 封筒の中には住所や単語が書かれた一枚のトランプカード。 カードは誰が送っているのか、メッセージの意味は？ 家族も友人もいるのにいまいちぱっとしない青年が、謎のカードがきっかけで様々な人とかかわり、自分の価値を見出していくという物語です。 善人も悪人も登場しますが、作者は基本的に性善説な人なのでしょう、読後感はさわやかです。 主人公のパートナー、犬のDoormanがいいですよ。 比較的簡単な英語で、難しい単語もなく、センテンスも簡潔なので、とても読みやすかったです。 だけど謎のトリックは・・・うーん、私はちょっと肩透かしでした。

満足できない結末
謎のカードが送られて、指定された住所や人を観察し、自分が何をしないといけないかを考え、それを実行するという、まるで道徳の教科書のような内容です。展開はそれなりに面白く、結末に向けてどんどん読み進みましたが、最後まで謎が謎のまま残る小説というのは、私は好きではありません。

私にはおもしろくなかった
たいていの方は、ほめていらっしゃいますが、私には、いかにも創作しましたという感じでした。女性も美少女しか出てこないという感じです。オードリーも訳が分からない。本当に好きな人がいるのに、あんな毎日をおくることができるのだろうか。主人公にカードを送りつける男も生きている人間におもえませんでした。そして出てくる言葉のうつくしくないこと、うんざりでした。たとえ現実であっても。

惜しい！
９５％をわくわく、どきどき、片時も離さず読んでいたのに、 誰が何故？という点では、えっという、肩透かし、落胆を味わってしまいました。 英語はかなり平易に書かれており、アメリカ英語ではありませんが、 違和感ないと思います。

My students and I really enjoyed this book! I bought it for a grade 11/12 read aloud. They really got into it and we had some great conversations.

Einfach schön.
Ich mag dieses Buch. Ich mag es, weil es schlicht und einfach ist, aber trotzdem eine Aussage hat und es dich nachdenklich zurücklässt. Du fragst dich nach der letzten Seite, was es ist, was dieses Buch besonders macht. Es gibt sehr wenige Bücher wie dieses. Es kommt still und leise um die Ecke und macht dich einfach glücklich. Ohne großes Aufsehen. Es ist einfach in deinem Leben und du lässt es nicht mehr los. Das ist schon das zweite Buch von Markus Zusak, dass ich gelesen habe und auch ich muss sagen, dass sein Schreibstil erfrischend einfach und klar ist. Es gibt keine versteckten Botschaften, keine umständlichen Beschreibungen. Und vielleicht liegt grade darin das Besondere ... Herr Zusak hat mit einfachen Worten etwas Wunderschönes erschaffen.
