  • Amazing novel, the language is a piece of art. History, imagination and fantasy mingle in a unique way. Loved it.

  • The eye of the storm in this story is the man Stefanovic: a doctor and grandfather. The story is told by his granddaughter Natalia, who is also a doctor. It is also the girl' s growing up story. It is set in Yugoslavia and post-Yugoslavia. It is also a little bit a story about how the one became the other. And then, would you believe it, it is a story about the undead and about a devil in tiger shape. Grandfather has told the girl the story about the tiger's wife. Later he tells her another story, about the deathless man. The book is dominated by these two stories. Her grandfather's life lay between them, she tells us. The tiger had escaped from the zoo during a bombing in WW2. He walked away from the city and lived in the wild. Learning to feed himself after growing up in a cage was his challenge. Finally he showed up in the hills where grandfather was shepherding as a boy. The boy was hooked on the Jungle Books at that time and for ever after. The core story about the tiger's wife is about the region's communal conflicts, domestic violence, and superstitions. The zombie appeared to grandfather while he was serving as a military doctor. A drowned man in a village had caused alarm by rising from the coffin during his funeral. Luckily he was a civilized zombie, not a cannibal. But the people felt uneasy about his not dying, not even after they shot him twice in the head. What can you expect, these are the Balkans! Vampires were invented near here. The author came to America at age 12. With this book she goes back home through her writing. Her family background is Slovenian/Bosnian,and her real name is Bajraktemovic, or something like that. As the grandfather's girl that she is, like her heroine, she uses grandfather's name, Stefan Obreht. This book has received high praise. The author has been named among the top young writers of fiction. This is indeed a strong novel. It shows how immigrants put life into American fiction. If necessary by using the undead. Influences from the magical realism school are obvious. Obreht's main strength lies in plot construction and the avoidance of over-explanation. I have enjoyed this book. My fear for the writer's future is that magical realism is not a sustainable platform. She needs to find another world.

  • Bello, avvincente, interessante e ben scritto.
