Although Chitra Divakaruni's poetry has won praise and awards for many years, it is her "luminous, exquisitely crafted prose" (Ms.) that is quickly making her one of the brightest rising stars in the changing face of American literature. Arranged Marriage , her first collection of stories, spent five weeks on the San Francisco Chronicle bestseller list and garnered critical acclaim that would have been extraordinary for even a more established author. For the young girls and women brought to life in these stories, the possibility of change, of starting anew, is both as terrifying and filled with promise as the ocean that separates them from their homes in India. From the story of a young bride whose fairy-tale vision of California is shattered when her husband is murdered and she must face the future on her own, to a proud middle-aged divorced woman determined to succeed in San Francisco, Divakaruni's award-winning poetry fuses here with prose for the first time to create eleven devastating portraits of women on the verge of an unforgettable transformation.

Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is the bestselling author of the novels Sister of My Heart and The Mistress of Spices ; the story collections The Unknown Errors of Our Lives and Arranged Marriage , which received several awards, including the American Book Award; and four collections of prize-winning poetry. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Ms., Zoetrope, Good Housekeeping, O: The Oprah Magazine, The Best American Short Stories 1999, and The New York Times. Born in India, Divakaruni lives near Houston. For further information about Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, visit her Web site at www.chitradivakaruni.com.

Reviews

  • I've lost copies of this and had to buy new because I keep lending it out. The stories are very well written. They also pull you into the world of South Asian women in a seductively simple and nuanced way. The unspoken norms and expectations, the attempts to break free or to remain within known parameters, the heartbreaks and the joys, the shame of others and of self, and so on. It is well worth reading.

  • Great read

  • Easy to read. Vivid descriptions. Heart-rending scenes. I'll recommend this book.

  • I really enjoyed the stories of Indian women and learning pieces of their cultural heritage. With each story one could see the commonalities of being a woman no matter your location and then there were times where you could sympathize with the plight of women from Indian culture. This is definitely worth the read!

  • Book Review: Arranged Marriage by Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni “Some stories stay with you. These settled into my bones.” I don’t know what took me so long to pick this book. Just finished this hauntingly beautiful collection, and I’m sitting here… quietly… stunned. Arranged Marriage isn’t just about arranged marriages. It’s about women—caught between tradition and desire, family and freedom, silence and selfhood. Each story felt like peeling back a layer of someone’s secret life. The kind of stories your aunties won’t tell you at the dinner table, but you know exist. Chitra Banerjee’s writing is lyrical but raw. You feel the longing, the quiet desperation, the small rebellions. My personal favourites? The Word Love – gut-wrenching. Clothes – hits hard for any woman who’s ever left everything behind. Affair – quietly bold. To be honest here, not every story worked equally for me, but even the ones that didn’t wow me left something to chew on. If you’ve ever lived between two cultures, two expectations, two selves—this book will literally whisper to you. ⭐️ 4.5/5 #Bookstagram #SouthAsianReads #ChitraBanerjeeDivakaruni #ShortStories #FeministFiction #ArrangedMarriageBook #bookreviewersofinstagram #bookreview #bookreviews #bookreviewsofinstagram
