Combining the personal with the political in his fifth collection, Martn Espada celebrates the bread of the imagination, the bread of the table, and the bread of justice. The heart of the collection is a series of autobiographical poems recalling family, school, neighborhood, and work experiences--from bouncer to tenant lawyer. There are moments of revelation and political transcendence here, which culminate in an elegy for the Puerto Rican poet Clemente Soto Velez, imprisoned for his advocacy of independence for Puerto Rico.
Martín Espada has published more than twenty books as a poet, editor, essayist and translator, including Vivas to Those Who Have Failed and Pulitzer finalist The Republic of Poetry . His many honors include the Ruth Lilly Prize, the Shelley Memorial Award, and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Born in Brooklyn, he now lives in western Massachusetts.

A perfectly fine, unmarred library book, complete with due date card pocket! The book was in great shape. I only wonder why the San Angelo County Texas Library System discarded a wonderful book of poetry by the great Martin Espada. Perhaps his poetry is too "progressive".

These poems are mind-bending. I'm a fiction writer and have often struggled to connect with poetry, but this collection makes me want more, and makes me wish I were in Massachusetts and could study with Espada. I want to learn how to write like this.

I found Martin Espada in the library in a small volume that has both Spanish and English for each poem. I love that juxtaposition of both languages; but this one, in only English, is a good example of his work. He is a strong voice, needfully angry sometimes, some poking fun, reminding us of pain and injustices we'd rather not know about. Telling it like a poet, a man who yells and cries. I like him very much.

Good product and good service.

The scope of his poetry in this book ranges from a meditation on Thomas Jefferson and food stamps to Pablo Neruda hiding out in Fenway Park. I have always found it challenging to combine imagination with the anger and indignation I often feel when witnessing bigotry, hatred and intolerance. Espada is one of those political poets whose anger is evident but who bears witness with grace and wit. Highly recommended.
