Maggie and Ira Moran have been married for twenty-eight years–and it shows: in their quarrels, in their routines, in their ability to tolerate with affection each other’s eccentricities. Maggie, a kooky, lovable meddler and an irrepressible optimist, wants nothing more than to fix her son’s broken marriage. Ira is infuriatingly practical, a man “who should have married Ann Landers.” And what begins as a day trip to a funeral becomes an adventure in the unexpected. As Maggie and Ira navigate the riotous twists and turns, they intersect with an assorted cast of eccentrics–and rediscover the magic of the road called life and the joy of having somebody next to you to share the ride . . . bumps and all.

  • In all honesty, it's been a while since I read this book. I don't even remember the storyline now. What I DO remember, is ploughing on valliantly to the end, hoping it would improve. It didn't. But most of all I remember just feeling really annoyed that I can never get the time back I wasted on reading this book! To make matters worse, a friend had sent me the actual book as a birthday present from England. Unfortunately the print was too small for my poor eyesight, so I purchased it as an ebook! I'll try to find someone to take the paperback off my hands.

  • Breathing Lessons is the story of a day in the life of Maggie Moran, a forty-eight year old woman who lives with her husband in Baltimore, a city about the size of Glasgow on the eastern seabord of the United States. She works in an old folks' home, has two grown-up children and a limited ability to control motor vehicles. (Breathing lessons would seem to be a lower priority than driving lessons.) We follow Maggie and her husband as they attend the funeral of an old friend; get involved with Mr. Otis, a pensioner who also has trouble with cars; and then drop in on Fiona, their son's ex-wife. In so far as the book has a central narrative thread, it is the question of whether (as Maggie dearly wishes) Fiona will be reconciled with their son. Although satirical comment about 'women drivers' is - statistically speaking - unfair, the running joke about Maggie's lack of motoring skills did raise a chuckle. Even funnier, against expectations, was the funeral scene, which is brilliantly done. The contrast between Maggie and her husband Ira is sharply drawn. Maggie is outgoing and always wants to get involved with other people and their problems; Ira's instinct is not to get involved, to leave well alone. It's a recognisable marital dynamic. I enjoyed Breathing Lessons, but found the development a little slow. (The whole Mr. Otis episode, for example, does not seem to move the plot forward in any discernible way.) For me, the novel lacks the magic of Tyler's best work.

  • Quite amazing this "a day in the life of..." story. Beautifully written, wise and thtoughy provoking... Probably more for the third and fourth generation reader

  • Great read

  • What we need in life, we are not taught in schools. This book, through the eyes of Maggie shows us the difference between our dreams and reality. There are so many instances where like Maggie, I thought if only youngsters would listen to sane advice. We realise that we cannot influence others to change . The change has to come from within. You can't always protect them from failure. They need to experience failure to understand success. The book doesn't end the way I wanted but probably that is the beauty of this story.
